ROMANCE
(...gothic and otherwise...)

Franco Accornero, THE PRISONER OF MALVILLE HALL - "Psychic forces trap her in a house of the dead" - The Warner Books paperback release of this gothic romance by Dorothy Daniels (one of their three releases, each with different art).

Geoffrey Biggs, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 59) - A comic adaptation of Emily Bronte's landmark gothic-romance.

Stanley Borack, GENERAL HOSPITAL-EMERGENCY ENTRANCE - "She had struggled hard to be a doctor. Now she had to risk her entire career to help the man she loved. // An original novel by Burt Hirschfeld based on the popular ABC-TV show." - The Lancer Books paperback release of this pastiche.  Almost two decades later, the art was cropped tight and re-used on the Mills & Boon release of the romance DOCTOR SARA COMES HOME by Elizabeth Houghton.

Charles Copeland, THE LEAST OF ALL EVILS - "The 'spider' spun a web that could mean death to the young bride curious enough to get caught in it." - Ace's paperback release of Helen Avronen's gothic romance (the publisher also produced a different edition with Jerome Podwil art).

John Duillo (only my own attribution), A TASTE OF MURDER - "Her sister's past haunted Anne, forcing her to keep a rendezvous with terror !" - The Ace paperback release of this gothic-romance by Isobel Lambot.  While I can't make out a signature at all, the only place I've seen this painting image reports that there is a nearly illegible one, that they make out as possibly 'John Dublin' or 'John Dillon', which is exactly what I imagine John Duillo's signature to look like if you aren't familiar with it and it's almost faded away...  Certainly the work itself is not out of keeping with some of his known gothic covers.

Norm Eastman, SUMMER'S PRIDE - The Harlequin paperback release of this tale from Angela Wells.

Norm Eastman, THE CLOUD HOLDERS - The Harlequin paperback release of this tale from Bethany Campbell.  Note that the art was flipped for the final 'product'.

Norm Eastman, TANGLED VINES 4, (in READER'S DIGEST CONDENSED BOOKS # 204) - One of the illustrations accompanying the condensed adaptation of Janet Daley's story, Tangled Vines, collected within this book.

Norm Eastman, INVESTING IN LOVE - Our title here is what was provided when this painting came to auction (with the additional information that it was a 1987 Harlequin paperback).  I've yet to be able to confirm such a book.

Mort Engle, JILL NOLAN, R.N. - "She was young, she was beautiful.  Now was the time to choose the right career, and the right man . . . ." - Dell's paperback release of Adeline McElfresh's first installation in the Jill Nolan nurse series.  Note that in the very same year Dell flipped & tightened the art and used it on the cover of their comic-book LINDA LARK REGISTERED NURSE #5, with the blurb "Linda faces the most challenging assignment of her medical career."

Clark Hulings, CORPORATION WIFE - "The intimate revealing novel that opens the doors to the bedrooms and boardrooms of the organization men, the women they marry and the company they promise to love, honor and obey" (also quoting the New York Times review, "The Peyton Place of the corporation town") - The Dell paperback release of Catherine Gaskin's novel.  Note that a year after this, the art was unflipped to grace the same company's comic book, PRIVATE SECRETARY #1, with the blurb: "Kim's climb to success cost many broken hearts. One of them was hers !".  After we had this for some time, I came across a webpage that gave the Hulings identification - if true, it certainly isn't his usual, but, along with a few others, he has been seen to utilize the scratchy-black-outline effect visible here.

Ron Lesser, SO WILD A RAPTURE - "A passionate woman torn between to dangerously jealous men" - A Playboy Press paperback release of Andrea Layton's romance.

Ron Lesser, THE TROPHY HUSBAND, (HARLEQUIN PRESENTS # 1835) - Harlequin's paperback release of Lynne Graham's romance.

Tom Miller, DR. KILDARE'S SEARCH - "To save a man's life, and his own career, Jim Kildare had to find a lovely girl he had never seen" - This was a Dell paperback release in Max Brand's Dr. Kildare series.  The publisher would later use this same art on the cover of it's comic-book NURSE LINDA LARK #8, with its blurb "A top-secret assignment nearly costs Linda her romance !".  It was also utilized on a French translation of Frank G; Slaughter's East Side General with a blurb that in English would say "Behind the scenes of the disease".

Tom Miller, THE DOCTOR MAKES A CHOICE - "A brilliant physician, in love with his work and his wife, suddenly face to face with the woman in his past." - Dell's paperback release of Elizabeth Seifert's medical-romance.  Note that the company later modified this art to use on the cover of its comic-book NURSE LINDA LARK #6, which we've also displayed immediately afterwards here because it seems so striking.  The comic's blurb was: "Was she still in love with the man from her past . . . or would the handsome young doctor win out ?"

Edvard Moritz, ROMEO AND JULIET, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 134) - A comic adaptation of this classic play by William Shakespeare.

Norman Nodel, JANE EYRE, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 39) - A comic adaptation of this novel by Charlotte Brontë.

Chris Schaare, TV STAR, (NURSE LINDA LARK # 7) - "A dedicated nurse . . . torn between love and her work, which will she choose !"

Bob Schinella (only my own attribution), THE DEADLY CLIMATE - Ace's paperback release of the gothic romance/mystery by Ursula Curtiss.  No signature seems present and I've seen no one credit this to Schinella, but I feel it is his work, especially when I see some the same broad-stroke streaky backgrounds on his works along with many the weedy patch (and he is definitively credited with the covers of other Ursula Curtiss books from Ace around the same time).

Ben F. Stahl, THE CALDWELL SHADOW - "The story of a girl who would not speak-and the agonizing secret only love could draw from her lips" - One of the Warner Books paperback releases of this gothic-romance by Dorothy Daniels.

Ben F. Stahl, MARRIOTT HALL - "In the shadowy mansion someone stalked Lily Bennett-to stop her from uncovering the terrifying mystery" - Warner's paperback release of the gothic romance by Dorothy Daniels.

Ben F. Stahl, THE PRISONER OF MALVILLE HALL - "Psychic forces trap her in a house of the dead" - Warner's paperback release of the gothic romance by Dorothy Daniels.  Note that this publisher had three different editions of this tale, using three different paintings on the covers by three different artists.

Jack Thurston, WITCHES' BREW - "She was pulled screaming from the arms of love by a satanic cult of evil" - The Curtis Books paperback release of Nancy Faulkner's gothic-romance.

     SOME MORE UNKNOWNS

O.K., we know where these were utilized, but WHO ARE THE ARTISTS ??

[artist unknown], LINDA LARK STUDENT NURSE, (LINDA LARK STUDENT NURSE # 1) - "The story of a young girl suddenly plunged into the drama and excitement of life in a great city hospital" - She was promoted to Registered Nurse with the second issue.

[artist unknown], [title unknown], (LINDA LARK REGISTERED NURSE # 2) - "Two doctors vied for her love - one rich and handsome the other poor, but dedicated . . ."

[artist unknown], SICK AT HEART!, (DEAR NANCY PARKER # 1) - "How can I win the heart of a doctor who doesn't even know I exist ?" - This seems to have been a fledgling anthology comic series using an advice-columnist as the 'host'

[artist unknown], SUMMER ROMANCE, (DEAR NANCY PARKER # 2) - "How can I tell if Mario really loves me or if it's just the romantic spell of the Venetian moon ?"

[artist unknown], THE LADYSHIP - "She was a model innkeeper. He was a constant customer. For Cupid, it was business as usual." - The Warner Regency Romance paperback release of this tale by Elizabeth Kidd ("author of A Hero For Antonia").

[artist unknown], VITAL INGREDIENT, (HARLEQUIN TEMPTATION # 121) - Harlequin's paperback release of Mary Jo Territo's romance.  While only a poor image of the original painting has been found here, the clearer cover image suggests to me that this might be George Wilson's work, especially since we know that he did Harlequin romance covers for years (and this 1986 publication was during that span).

[artist unknown], PICTURE OF DEATH - "The murderer was safe: the only witness had lost her memory. But what if one day she remembered ?" - The Ace Gothic paperback release of this tale by Diane Lapoint.  One knowledgible source claimed that the painting was Victor Prezio's, but I'm just not yet confident enough to accept that.

[artist uknown], VOICE ON THE WIND - "Janet's legacy from her late uncle is a sinister mansion - and his mortal enemies" - Paperback Library's release of this gothic romance from Dorothy Daniels (they had at least one other release with different cover art).

[artist unknown], NURSE ON THE RUN - Ace's paperback release of Arlene Hale's nurse-romance.  The cover itself has been 'well-presented' in THE LOOK OF LOVE.

[artist unknown], SLEEP NO MORE - "An Inspector Finch Gothic #6" - The Ace paperback release of this gothic-romance by Margaret Erskine.  Many years later the art was re-used on the print-on-demand editions of Bram Stoker's story-collection, Dracula's Guest.  On the Interweb, this image sometimes gets identified as Robert Maguire's, but I think that is confusion around the fact that Maguire did the cover for the *following* Ace edition of this book.

[artist uknown], THE FAR SIDE OF DESTINY - "The haunting love story of a man and a woman on a passionate journey to The Far Side Of Destiny" - Dell's paperback release of Dore Mullen's romance.

[artist uknown], HILLS OF FIRE - "She was Jefferson Lange's daughter, heir to all he possessed-including the undying hatred of his murderer." - Warner Books's later paperback release of Dorothy Daniels's gothic romance.  Vic Prezio appears to have executed the cover of the earlier edition of this tale, but this later painter remains unknown.

[artist uknown], THE BEAUMONT TRADITION - "Joyce's marriage to Vern Beaumont brings her love, wealth - and danger !" - Paperback Library's release of Dorothy Daniels's gothic-romance.  There is a bit of a signature, but I haven't seen it well enough to make it out.

[artist uknown], SHADOW GLEN - "A memory of evil threatens the life of a young woman struggling to unlock the mystery of her past in a sinister castle on the Hudson" - Paperback Library's release of this gothic romance from Dorothy Daniels.

[artist unknown], THE MAN FROM YESTERDAY - "Was the man Sybil loved a vengeful spirit intent on destroying her ?" - Paperback Library's release of this gothic romance from Dorothy Daniels.

[artist unknown], SNOW SHADOW - "A romantic spellbinder of forgotten love and terror reawakened" - Fawcett's paperback release of Andre Norton's gothic romance.  "Dick Ziven" is a name attributed by several sources, but I'm guessing that a repeated continuance of someone's mis-reading of the painting's signature (there seems to be no illustrator named Ziven).  "Dick" does indeed look to be the given name, but it's just mush afterwards....

[artist uknown], VOICE ON THE WIND - "Janet's legacy from her late uncle is a sinister mansion - and his mortal enemies" - Paperback Library's release of this gothic romance from Dorothy Daniels (they did at least one other release that used different art).

[artist uknown], LADY OF THE SHADOWS - "A beautiful young girl is trapped in an old mansion haunted by her own ghost." - Paperback Library's release of this gothic romance from Dorothy Daniels (they released at least two with different art).  There is a signature, but I'm not able to recognize it yet.

[artist uknown], LADY OF THE SHADOWS - "A beautiful young girl is trapped in an old mansion haunted by her own ghost." - Paperback Library's release of this gothic romance from Dorothy Daniels (they had at least two releases with different art).

[unknown artist], KIM'S EUROPEAN TOUR, (PRIVATE SECRETARY # 2) - "Kim is forced to make a desperate choice !"

[artist unknown], SHIP OF FEAR, (LINDA LARK REGISTERED NURSE # 4) - "The voyage every girl dreamed of was Linda's . . . romance, moonlight nights, adventure . . . but there was also danger on the Ship Of Fear !"

[artist unknown], SHADOW OVER GENERAL HOSPITAL, (LINDA LARK REGISTERED NURSE # 3) - "Who was the mysterious intruder . . . the figure who kept stalking Linda Lark ?"

[artist unknown], HOPE SHIP, (HOPE SHIP # 1) - "Brave young doctors and nurses on a world wide mission of mercy" - a comic that lasted only this one issue.

     MODERN, OR PROBABLY SO

Glen Orbik, THE EVIL IN PEMBERLY HOUSE - The Meteor House release of this "darkly erotic" entry in the loose Wold/Newton series by its originator Philip José Farmer accompanied by Win Scott Eckert.
